REGINA PARRA
"Rumor"

October 1 - November 8, 2009

In the solo exhibition Rumor, Regina Parra presents a new series of paintings created from an initial point: frames of a surveillance camera. Besides the paintings, the artist also presents a site specific that shuffles the positions of the vigilant and the secured.

The exhibition searches a reflection of control and uncertainty of the world today, amplifying the research the artist initiated in the group show 2000eOito, in São Paulo.

Cities, streets and buildings are monitored by a CCTV. There is always a surveillance camera around. The society of the spectacle is the society of surveillance: lights, camera, action. But what exactly is the action? What exactly is the image registered?

Following Arlindo Machado’s words in Máquina e Imaginário, “in the surveillance camera monitors, even the most ordinary man, like in Kafka ́s novels, seem to be stricken by guilt; the scenarios strongly recall the landscape of a crime that is about to be committed.

In this territory, everyone is a suspect, but nothing is quite clear. Nothing. In Regina Parra’s work, situations are revealed little by little, but never entirely. Like a spread rumor, with no confirmation or denial, leaving the audience a trace of fear and anxiety.
