Anna-Catharina Gebbers und die Kuratoren von 176/Zabludwicz Collection, London, haben Künstler eingeladen, am 30. August 2008 für einen Abend lang ihr Trinkglas in einer Berliner Bar auf ein Glasregal zu stellen. Nur ein Namensaufkleber auf dem Boden des Glases verrät die Identität seines Besitzers und verwandelt den Alltagsgegenstand in ein besonderes Artefakt. Um die Namen der Besitzer lesen zu können, müssen die Besucher unter das Glasregal treten oder sich darunter beugen und ihren Hals danach recken. Nachdem die Gläser in der Berliner Bar standen, wird die gesamte Sammlung nach London wandern und im Café von 176, dem Ausstellungsraum der Zabludowicz Collection, platziert werden. Dort stehen die Gläser während der Ausstellungsdauer von Material Presence (11.9.-14.12.2008), einer umfangreichen Ausstellung von Skulpturen und Installationen aus dem Besitz der Zabludowicz Collection mit Arbeiten von Laura Buckley, Myriam Holme, Graham Hudson, James Ireland, Alexej Meschtschanow, Katja Strunz und Mark Titchner.
„Glas“ bezeichnet ebenso ein Material wie auch ein Objekt. Mit dem Begriff lassen sich vielfältige Konnotationen von Wert, kultureller Bedeutung und ästhetischer Erfahrung verbinden. The Krautcho Club / In and out of Place kontextualisiert die Gläser durch ein Ausstellungskonzept und -display, wodurch zudem grundlegende Verfahren von Sammlung, Ausstellung, Readymade und Ortsspezifik ins Spiel kommen. Entsprechend entfalten die Beiträge der Künstler eine Vielzahl von Stellungnahmen und Interpretationen bezüglich der erhaltenen Einladung. Verschiedene Vorstellungen von Sammlung, Material, Wert, Bedeutung und Raum treffen so durch eine einfache Ausstellungsvorgabe aufeinander und füllen Bar wie Café mit einem Sammelsurium von Trinkgläsern.
Forgotten Bar Project ist eine von der Galerie im Regierungsviertel initiierte, nichtkommerzielle Galerie mit Bar in Berlin Kreuzberg, die von Juli bis August 2008 ein täglich wechselndes Ausstellungsprogramm präsentiert. 176 ist ein nichtkommerzieller Projektraum, der von der Zabludowicz Collection betrieben wird und der sich in einem im 19. Jahrhundert erbauten Gebäude einer ehemaligen Methodistischen Kirche in London Camden befindet.
Der Titel The Krautcho Club / In and out of Place verbindet eine ironische Anspielung an einen bekannten Members Club der Londoner Medien- und Kunstwelt, in dem sich geschäftliche und soziale Sphäre kreuzen, mit einem Kontextualisierungsvorgang, der in einer fast „vergessenen“ deutschen Bar seinen Ausgang nimmt.
The Krautcho Club / In and out of Place ist das erste gemeinsame Ausstellungsprojekt von 176/Zabludowicz Collection London und ihrer Gastkuratorin Anna-Catharina Gebbers. „In and out of place“ zitiert ein Essay von Andrea Fraser über Louise Lawler und kennzeichnet die folgenden Projekte als Serien. Zugleich ist es der Titel der umfangreichen Ausstellung im 176, die Anna-Catharina Gebbers im Mai 2009 kuratieren wird.

Anna-Catharina Gebbers and the curators at 176 have invited a selection of artists to lend a drinking glass they own to a bar in Berlin where it will be exhibited on a glass shelf for one evening on 30 August 2008. Only a name on the bottom of each glass will reveal the identity of its selector and owner and turn the everyday object into a rarified artefact. To access the names of the lenders visitors have to step or bow down under the shelf and crane their necks. After being displayed in Berlin, the entire collection will be transported to London and installed in the café at 176, where it will be displayed concurrently with Material Presence (11 Sept - 14 Dec, 2008) a large scale exhibition of sculpture and installation from the Zabludowicz collection, including work by Laura Buckley, Myriam Holme, Graham Hudson, James Ireland, Alexej Meschtschanow, Katja Strunz and Mark Titchner.
‘Glass’ is the name for both a material and an object; as such it carries connotations of value, cultural significance and aesthetic experience. The Krautcho Club / In and out of place contextualizes the glasses by the exhibition’s concept and display mechanisms, which in turn incarnate basic modes of collecting and exhibition, and engage with themes of the readymade and site-specificity. The artists’ contributions display a multitude of responses to and interpretations of the invitation they received. Different concepts of collecting, material, value, content and space come together through a simple exhibition conceit and fill bar as café with a conglomeration of drinking glasses.
Forgotten Bar Project is a temporary not-for-profit gallery initiated by Galerie im Regierungsviertel and is housed in a Berlin bar. It is running a daily changing exhibition program from July to August 2008. 176 is a not-for-profit project space run by the Zabludowicz Collection and housed in a deconsecrated 19th-century Methodist Chapel in north London.
The title The Krautcho Club / In and out of Place combines an ironic reference to a well known London media/art world members club with the process of contextualization launched in a ‘forgotten’ German bar.
The Krautcho Club / In and Out of Place is the first joint exhibition project between 176 and their guest curator Anna-Catharina Gebbers. “In and Out of Place”, borrowed from an Andrea Fraser essay about Louise Lawler, will indicate upcoming joint projects as sequels and is the title of the exhibition curated by Anna-Catharina Gebbers at 176 opening in May 2009.
