Zahra Rashid works with drawing, printing techniques and installation, concerning herself above all with the reproduction and multiple representation of objects in various media. Rashid’s artistic practice is founded on an ongoing experimental working process in the studio. In this sense, the artist understands her exhibitions as an opportunity to represent this process, by highlighting its specific aspects.

The primary medium and object of research in Rashid’s recent works is the material paper along with its diverse qualities and connotations: easily available working material, medium for the transport and communication of knowledge, and a carrier for Rashid’s favoured artistic medium, drawing. She uses paper in an unusual way, by ‘deconstructing’ it, for example, into papiermaché, from which she later produces book pages in turn, ultimately assembling them into a book object; the area that is normally printed on, however, is cut out of Rashid’s works, so that a ‘negative’ space develops between the pages. In the current works the artist also studies casting as a way of duplication: in time-consuming work, she makes cast copies of a sheet of paper using plaster of Paris – infinitely fragile figurations always threatened by destruction, which are protected beneath glass in her studio in the Künstlerhaus Bethanien.
