ELENI PANOUKLIA

BASIS 2002-2003

“The once upon the time Grand Hotel “The Theoxenia”, which is now a ruin – a monument, was the motivation for this installation. In my attempt to feel the vibrations of the building, I was led to the cellar. The kitchen, the laundry and the storehouse, composed the backstage of the “grand” life, of the public and the private space, of the inside and outside, of the “appearing” and the “being”.
The viewer is not allowed to physically enter the cellar. But he can see it from two different optical angles, one from the inside part of the building and the other from the outside part of the building. I used a very flexible material (rope) to insinuate imaginary foundations in the empty basement and a hard material (charcoal) to imply the actual end of the building (the building was burned by the Germans in 1944). The illusion of a solid volume –a translucent solid volume- is created by numeral successive empty by-spaces.”
