EXCURSIONS IN THE GLARUS ALPS: WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION OF GLARNER KUNSTVEREIN AND MORE

CARL ANDRE, STANLEY BROUWN, BALTHASAR BURKHARD, ALBERT BOSSHARD, HAMISH FULTON, RICHARD LONG, PATRICK ROHNER, JOHANN GOTTFRIED STEFFAN, BALZ STÄGER, KOJI TAKIHARA, GÜNTHER UECKER

As early as the 19th Century, artists, writers and geologists such as Arnold Böcklin, Rudolf Koller, Johann Gottfried Steffan, Balz Stäger, Carl Spitteler, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer, Albert Heim and Albert Bosshard ventured into the Glarus Alps to capture the dramatic alpine landscape on canvas, describe it or document it scientifically. Even today, the Klöntal and the Glarus Alps remain a favourite destination for artists. These include Carl Andre, Balthasar Burkhard, Richard Long, Hamish Fulton, Roman Signer, Fischli/Weiss, Christoph Büchel and Patrick Rohner. A preoccupation with untamed nature, not far from urban centres, remains current as a starting point for artistic gestures and commentaries. The extended presentation of the collection on the lower floor of the Kunsthaus is showing a selection of works by different generations of artists, with particular reference to the Glarus Alps. The works were chiefly made in the Klöntal and the surrounding landscapes. The exhibition includes both works of landscape painting from the 19th Century and sculpture, contemporary photography and film works. Leaving aside works from the collection of Glarus Art Association, numerous loans from the programme of Galerie Tschudi will be on display. This gallery has inspired a series of major international artists to work in the Glarus Alps, and thus connects directly with the tradition of artists’ colonies and projects in the Alpine area since the 19th Century.
