HOT OR COLD (HEISS ODER KALT) MEMORIES OF WAR, FLIGHT AND EXPULSION AFTER 1989

Controversial works about the construction of memories after 1989: dependency, rewriting, taboos, and the relationship of power to powerlessness. With works by Katja Eydel, Jeanne Faust, Flaka Haliti, Alen Hebilovic, Ulrike Kuschel, Josephine Meckseper, Mladen Miljanovic, Frederic Moser / Philippe Schwinger, Deimantas Narkevicius, Ho Tzu Nyen, Nihad Nino Pusija, Mario Rizzi, Julika Rudelius, Anri Sala, Piotr Zylinski

The interdisciplinary project “Memory, Culture and Art: Remembrance and Dealing with the past after 1989” opens a dialogue between arts, culture and science on discourses and politics of individual and collective memories in post-socialist Europe after 1989. Project countries are Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosova. Despite the differing historical contexts of these countries in Central Europe and former Yugoslavia, people and societies face similar experiences of war, flight, expulsion and (ethnic) post-war conflicts.

The project consists of interlinked parts
1. International conference in Berlin (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin) and roundtable discussion (Goethe-Institute, Belgrade)
2. Workshops with artists (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin)
3. Interview project with leading representatives from art and culture in Central Europe
4. Internet documentation at the site:
5. Exhibition in Berlin (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin)
6. Publication by the publisher transcript Verlag
