KATARINA LOFSTROM
"Little Star"
We are proud to present Katarina Löfström ́s first solo show at the gallery.
Katarina Löfström was born 1970. Her critically acclaimed work has recently been seen in exhibitions such as Art Basel Miami Beach, Malmö Konsthall, Marabouparken, Stockholm, Jan Winkelmann, Berlin and Moderna Museet, Stockholm. She graduated from the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm 1997 and has since then mainly worked with video.
In her exhibition at Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Katarina Löfström presents a new film entitled Little Star. An Islamic system of pattern, which can be found at Alhambra in Grenada, is the inspirational source for the film. She has zoomed in on this pattern and navigates through it on a very close range. The camera panns from right to left and from left to right, like the Western and the Eastern way of reading a text.
One characteristic in Katarina Löfström ́s work is her abstractions of images or a concept. She strives to see behind the motif and extract the image’s or the concept’s code. Little Star emanates from oriental ornamentals. Since Islam prohibits any depictions of the divine, the ornamentation has developed into elaborate patterns, filled with symbolism and mystical interpretations of numbers. Intricate patterns, repeating themselves in infinity serve as symbols for the divine instead.
Löfström ́s works is also currently on view in Trial Balloons, at the Museum for Contemporary Art, MUSAC in León, Spain. In September she will participate in Protections at Kunsthaus Graz, Austria, were Löfström has been invited to produce a film for the building’s facade. (www.kunsthausgraz.at)
The exhibition opens Thurs May 11, 5-8 pm and runs through June 17. The gallery is open Tues- Fri 11-5 pm and Sat 12-5 pm.
Welcome!
Andréhn-Schiptjenko will participate at Art 37 Basel, June 14 – 18 were we also will present installations by Xavier Veilhan and Kader Attia at Art Unlimited.
