BENNY DRÖSCHER

"GALLERY PER DAY" ROKEBY, BENNY DRÖSCHER, LURKING FOR TRANSCENDENTAL MOMENTS

This kooky sculpture and drawing show by Danish artist Dröscher was fantastic. On all levels. From a very absurdist platform, with bright colours and silver, the artist used imagery from myth and fantasy, cartoon and whimsy. The works focused on transcendence and analyzing traditional forms of organisation. In fact, the symbolism drew fairly heavily from childhood and Christmas. While the first sculpture that you encounter in the gallery is pretty lame, the rest of the work is fantastic, as in great. I particularly loved the drawings, all of which were Lurking for Transcendental Moments and a couple of the sculptures – especially the blue/silver/spiky one on the mezzanine. If you’re into the imagery of Matthew Barney (and let’s face it, who isn’t these days) then you will probably appreciate the particularly Northern feel of this show.
