TRYING AND TESTING. A CONVERSATION IN WORDS AND IMAGES WITH HARUN FAROCKI.

Harun Farocki, Leben - BRD, 1990.
A job interview, workers leaving a factory, and a prenatal class all have in common that these situations are performed over and over in countless variations every day. But film cameras, too, have captured these movements countless times – for educational purposes, documentaries, feature films, etc. Every day, we move to make and to match pictures. The script for the performance of these moving images is established by each one of us. This cinema of the self is based on a politics of image production that could be described as pre-re-enactment: there are pictures that are rehearsed for enacting them when the real thing happens at some later point in time, and these pictures again might become the model for further pictures with new protagonists. From Godard and from Farocki’s films we learn: film is not a reflection of reality – it is the reality of the reflection itself. The films by Farocki featured in the Auto-Kino! program – Leben BRD (How To Live in the FRG), Arbeiter verlassen die Fabrik (Workers Leaving The Factory) and Die Bewerbung (The Interview) – form the basis for this conversation about film and show between filmmaker Harun Farocki and curator Doreen Mende. Plus a subsequent screening of Farocki's recent film Immersion.
