Jonathan Monk - Life and Death

12 Nov - 17 Dec 2011

It is said art is a matter of life or death; this may be melodramatic but it is also true.

The exhibition at Nitzana Street will attempt to document the life and sudden death of a light bulb.

A Bauhaus lamp designed by Wilhelm Wagehfeld in 1924 with a standard 60 watt bulb will be the main character of this video piece.

The lamp will be filmed using highly sophisticated surveillance and recording equipment.

It is impossible for us to know the length of this process.

Death will be our guarantee.

A text piece made with phosphorescence lettering displays the name of the exhibition. Life and Death is almost invisible during the daylight hours; it gains its strength from light, only to be come activated in the dark...

The life of the piece slowly fading as time passes.

A new series of still life paintings will also be presented.
