As part of Amsterdam Interntional Fashion Week (25 to 30 January 2006) Foam presents work by the young fashion photographer Sylvia Alonso. Alonso recently won NuPerspective, a scheme to encourage and promote Dutch fashion photography among photographers under 35.
Loose is a new series produced by Alonso especially for the exhibition, focusing on exuberance. Her lyrical images combine reality and fiction, art and document. The world Alonso captures is that of her own generation in which extremes of sex, drugs and violence are continually being tested and explored in a search for personal identity. Loose examines our natural tendency to behave extravagantly, which society usually manages to stifle through rules and norms. With challenging insight Alonso shows what happens when fantasy meets reality.
Sylvia Alonso (b. 1978) graduated in 2004 at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague and was nominated that same year for the Shell Young Art Award. She has exhibited at Amsterdams Centrum voor Fotografie, Kunsthal and Cokkie Snoei gallery in Rotterdam. Alonso has also published fashion series in Blend and Jackie magazines.
