LEIKO IKEMURA

May 6 - June 13, 2009
Opening Reception: May 5, 2009

Ikemura sees herself as an intermediary between Japanese and Western cultures. Her paintings and scultures show atmospheric compositions of bodies being situated in space. The picture evokes the impression of eternity denying any rational explanations. Early in the 1990s the female figure emerged as her main theme for the years to come. Also, the bronze and terracotta statues created by the hands represent a synthesis of women figures and hybrid forms drawing from the bodies of animals and plant shapes.
