Like Nine Pin

‘I think every game is a universe in a way, or every game is an expression of how the universe works, for different cultures.’
Gabriel Orozco

I have never played nine pin. It is the forerunner of 10 pin bowling. Like any game, like any sport, it has its own set of rules that vary through time. Each game claims a distinct ‘landscape’, space, set of conditions and entertainment value. It speaks of tradition, skill and competition. The emotional and political dimension of games and sports are complex. What is played out has its own aesthetics and erotics. These are often bound to the capacities and limits of the body and to sanctified violence. The amount of capital and personal investment in sports is incomparable to the ‘arts’. Does it matter where national sports like soccer, cricket or rugby, wrestling or boxing originate from and how they come to be popular obsessions? In what ways do they begin to speak about ‘us’?

In this show each work is a winner, a player and a trophy. Each work demands to be first, the fastest and the best. In this way they reveal everything they can give. What interests me is what happens between the images and the way they compete. They are based on stock photography taken from the net, from national sport magazines and newspapers. And they want the world.
