MARIA NEPOMUCENO

23 JAN – 6 JUNE, 2010

The Brasilian artist Maria Nepomuceno is currently producing new work for her exhibition at Magasin 3 to be held in January 2010. The artist is constantly reassembling her sculptures, incorporating them in each other or taking them apart - they spread across and inhabit her exhibitions like vegetation. The shapes are reminiscent of living organisms while at the same time oscillating between amorphous and unmistakably phallic, like Louise Bourgeois' works in stone. The artist wants to ”create a situation that feels like transitting through the beginning of our civilization and the present moment”. Past and present are fused in objects made using traditional craftsmanship to new ends. One of her sculptures is a container for thousands of pearls while another is an inviting hammock made of climbing rope tightly interwoven with shiny lace. Maria Nepomuceno was born in 1976. She lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
