Erinnern
10 September – 9 October, 2011

Yvon Lambert is pleased to announce the second exhibition at the gallery of German photographer Candida Höfer.
The exhibition opens Saturday, September 10th from 6pm to 9pm in the presence of the artist, and runs through October 9th.
The exhibition, entitled "Erinnern", explores the spatialization of memory, silence and time. It deepens Candida Höfer's depicting of the architecture of absence. For this new exhibition, the artist presents photographs taken in Berlin, Naples and Seville. The dimensions of the pictures seem to spread like layers of time. Candida Höfer's work is based on objectivity and distanciation. The precision of the photograph echoes the spirit of place and reveals its whole power. With this exhibition at the gallery Yvon Lambert, the artist engages the viewer in the contemplation of memories.
Behind her camera lens, Candida Höfer captures her view of a world devoid of any human presence, and concentrates on the place itself. She studied with Bern and Hilla Becher at Düsseldof Academy of Arts, after first studying cinema with Ole John.
Like the Bechers, through typology and seriality, the photograph becomes a witness, a confident of the place where she decides to set up her camera. For the past 35 years, Candida Höfer has been exhibiting single works or series of photographs – always empty spaces. Her choice of sites to photograph is highly meaningful: museums, churches, opera houses, etc – she selects places that embody culture or spirituality, thus giving another dimension to her pictures. Through a seeming detachment and objectivity, she triggers a whole new perception of each space.
In 2006, she exhibited her latest works at the Louvre; the title of the show, "Candida Höfer: Architecture of Absence", reflects the philosophical research of her work.
"The secret behind the effectiveness and the beauty of these images might lie in the paradox between presence and absence, between the bareness, the clarity of the image and the mystery it exudes", wrote Marie-Laure Bernadac, chief curator of contemporary art to the Louvre, for the artist's exhibition in 2006.
Born in 1944, Candida Höfer lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
