CHARLOTTE SCHLEIFFERT

In Charlotte Schleiffert’s (1967, Tilburg, NL) monumental drawings the action is generally limited to one figure: mostly women, posing full-length, larger than everyday life as a warrior, pin-up, hard rocker, cover girl or pop idol. In a challenging and confronting way Schleiffert presents her figures to her public: high healed, bearded, armed, animal like and monstrous. At the same time she accompanies her protagonists with texts. These texts can stimulate associations or can point at precise facts: taken out of literature, newspapers or magazines they form an extra layer to the image.
Schleiffert has travelled to Mexico, Africa, Cuba and Thailand. Right now she is living in China. Her confrontation with politics, media and everyday life forms the dynamics within her drawings and paintings.
In 2004 Charlotte Schleiffert had her first survey at the Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Curator Wilma Sütö writes in the catalogue Feel no Shame “Her heroes are imaginary figures, crosses between people she meets in the street and celebrities from television or from photo’s in newspapers, magazines and books. Not only does she appropriate countless documentary photos by copying them in her drawings and reworking them in her paintings, but she travels a great deal too, long, distant journeys, as if wanting to check out for herself the mechanised picture the mass media portrays of the world. And to brush it up.”
In 1999 Schleiffert received the Prix de Rome Award for Painting. In 2004 she had a solo exhibition at the Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam (NL). In 2005 Schleiffert exhibited works in the exhibition 'Verf' / Paint at the Stadsgalerij Heerlen (NL), she had been nominated for the Premio di Golfo Award in Italy, took part in the exhibition 'Getting rid of Madonna' at the Kunsthaus Dresden and participated at a group show at Galerie Barbara Gross in Munich. In 2006 she will have a solo exhibition in Kunstmuseum Glückstadt in Germany.
