MARTIN JACOBSON
February 16 - March 30 2008
We are proud to present Martin Jacobson’s first solo exhibition at Andréhn-Schiptjenko. The opening will take place on Saturday, February 16, between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Martin Jacobson was born in 1978 and lives and works in Malmö. He graduated from Malmö Art Academy in 2005. His exhibition at Andréhn-Schiptjenko will consist of drawings and photographs.
The point of departure for Martin Jacobson’s work is often one or several pictures, which have found their way into his hands. He searches for pictures at flea markets, in libraries and on the internet. The pictures he chooses are centered around themes and issues such as the relationship between time and history, history and the individual, the individual and his surroundings, the sign and what it denotes, transitions and opposites, dream and reality, the physical and the non-physical. Of these pictures, he compiles collages, which he then draws in ink.
"My work is based on the curiosity and fascination of that which is beyond my understanding and experience. I try to see and read the phenomena and objects that come in my way. I search for provisional recipes or methods, which can articulate and activate something in me or in somebody else. I search for the combinations for the locked parts of my consciousness. Some objects and phenomena remind me of the inadequacy of my senses and my state of awoken sleep; fractals in nature, groups of similar objects or mirror balls, to name a few. Piranesi's graphic works have that effect on me. His pictures remind me of the fact that that which I see, is neither a whole nor a truth. That which at a distance forms a cloud or a building is at close range only a collection of lines varying in thickness and in length.
My work process is characterized by coincidences and intuition, but also of control and consciousness. It also hovers between control and non-control, and trying to control the material and the material controlling me. For me, my work is also about interpretations and imitation. As the child imitates the adults, I strive for experiences beyond my comprehension."
