MARIKA MÄKELÄ
Signed Place
20.11. - 19.12.2008
Marika Mäkelä’s new paintings are soot, raven and tropical-night black, pearl, bone and snow white, and with the sheen of moonlight on water, mice and white willow.
This grand priestess of Finnish painting still works on wood. Her lace-like engraved maps, deeper forms in grooved relief, chiselled backgrounds and the dark glow of oil paints assemble to become at once dynamic and meditative, magnificent with self-awareness and readily breathing.
Marika Mäkelä’s paintings are like places that she signs as her own in her inimitable hand. We are allowed to be in these places. We are allowed to enjoy ourselves in them.
Over the past year Galerie Anhava has been happy to display works by Marika Mäkelä at both Art Chicago and Art Basel.
