MARY ELLEN MARK
16 November 2013 – 3 January 2014

The gallery Anne de Villepoix presents for the first time Mary Ellen Mark's work, an American photographer born in 1940. She started her career with reportage and shot a lot of film shootings from the 60's to the 80's in Hollywood and also the French Nouvelle Vague. Her work has also another side, less glamorous, along through her trips around the world she photographed human beings in chaotic surroundings from Calcutta to Soudan.
Many books have been published to illustrate her work. The biggest north american museums acquired her photographs.
Here, we present a set she made during two trips in Oaxaca , south of Mexico and through India. These specific argentic prints show people from the circus world who captivate our attention . We understand through these pictures what she meant when trying to explain her work she said " i am particularly interested by people on the side"
