INDIA : ART NOW
18 August 2012 - 13 January 2013

INDIA : ART NOW is showing 13 of the best artists and artist groups from India. These artists are constantly interacting with the global community. India’s economic growth has spurred the development of Indian contemporary art and has helped to spread it far beyond the borders of the country in a dialogue between Indian and Western culture and artistic tradition.

Global Indian contemporary art
Indian contemporary art is not only created in Mumbai and Delhi, where many of the artists live and work. It also unfolds at the European academies of art, where several of the artists have studied, at galleries in Paris, New York or Berlin, in international publications and at exhibitions all over the world.

The participating artists are Rina Banerjee, Hemali Bhuta, Atul Dodiya, Sheela Gowda, Shilpa Gupta, Subodh Gupta, Jitish Kallat, Reena Saini Kallat, Rashmi Kaleka, Bharti Kher, Ravinder Reddy, Vivan Sundaram and the artist duo Thukral & Tagra.

The artists have been chosen because they are outstanding, and because their scope extends beyond ideas of an exotic India. Their works revolve around among other things the city, the intimate sphere and the relations between culture, identity and the conditions of life in our global society.

Saris and trash landscapes
In the exhibition we see saris and trash landscapes, we hear the sounds of Delhi’s street vendors and we see high-tech shadow plays. Several of the works were created for the exhibition, and they both encourage and defy all our notions about Indian art. The sub¬jects, materials and narratives of the artists often take their point of departure in local Indian phenomena. Is their world also yours?
For the exhibition ARKEN has produced a documentary on three of the participating artists. The film is made in corporation with the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. The film is displayed in a reading room with extravagant furniture by the design duo DOSHI LEVIEN.
