Vik Muniz
29 Oct 2008 - 17 Jan 2009
Brazilian artist Vik Muniz will be presenting his first solo show in Germany at Arndt & Partner, Berlin. We will be showing pieces from four bodies of work on both levels of the galleries at Checkpoint Charlie.
Among others his recently finished series „Pictures of Paper" which focuses on the classics of the history of photography such as August Sander, Dorothea Lange, Garry Winogrand or Arnold Newman will be shown the first time.
Vik Muniz’s conceptual photography predominantly deals with the reconstruction of famous paintings and master pieces. For many years he has been experimenting with a wide range of materials, such as sugar, dust or chocolate. He uses these to create chaotic copmpositions that upon closer look emerge as respresentational images - rudimentary and simple yet with a stunning illusional effect: 'Illusions as bad as mine,' he says, 'make people aware of the fallacies of visual information and the pleasure to be derived from such fallacies. These illusions are made to reveal the architecture of our concept of truth.' (Vik Muniz)
