Desire. Romance. Power. Sex. Pain. Passion. Hate. The full spectrum of human emotions is in evidence at a unique exhibition where 39 international artists highlight the strongest emotion known to man: love.
For the first time ever, a Danish art museum investigates the multi-faceted nuances of love. Set against three kilometres of textiles, the ‘I LOVE YOU’ exhibition is a powerful sensual and aesthetic journey into the world of love, featuring the work of 39 international artists, including Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Louise Bourgeois, Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin, Nan Goldin, Barbara Kruger, Pipilotti Rist and Rebecca Horn.
LOVE – THE ETERNAL THEME
Love has always been the preserve of the artist. Whereas studies of romance and eroticism in earlier times were often clandestine, art from the mid-20th century has increasingly painted a more nuanced picture of human relationships, questioning the very concept of love.
SENSUAL ARTISTIC JOURNEY
Featuring a diverse range of video, sculpture, installation art, paintings and photography, the exhibition visualises the multi-faceted nature of love, as seen through the eyes of 40 international artists from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The majority of the works are contemporary, however. Common to all the artists is that their work touches on the complexities of love, unravelling the entire spectrum of human emotions, from the giddiness of new-found love to everyday trivialities and suppressed forbidden love. ’I LOVE YOU’ compares myriad artistic impressions, showing that love and hate, fascination and revulsion are constant companions.
UNIQUE SETTING
By virtue of an exclusive collaboration with Kvadrat, Europe's leading manufacturer of modern innovative textiles, ARoS has succeeded in creating a unique setting for the ‘I LOVE YOU’ exhibition. The exhibition's architectural whole, with its numerous sensual rooms, nooks and crannies, has been created by the renowned Danish architect Dorte Mandrup. With the multi-faceted nature of love in mind, she has fused Kvadrat's textiles with ARoS’ magnificent architecture to create the perfect setting for the sensually powerful and aesthetic journey that is ‘I LOVE YOU’. The exhibition is thus an innovative and absorbing experience where art, architecture as well as staging come together to create a sensual journey into love's innumerable perspectives.
