Charles Ray
16.09 - 17.12.2006
Charles Ray (b. 1953) is an adept sailor. For him, sailing is closely related to making sculpture – both acts entail mastering aspects such as gravity, weight and balance. The exhibited works revolve around themes such as the transience of life and the enigma of being. What is real becomes unreal, what is commonplace becomes unfamiliar. His recycling of art and reality represent an aesthetic transition and shows that artistic structures never are limited to just one meaning. As one of the USA’s most significant artists of the last twenty years, Ray examines the relation between reality and authenticity, and the meaning of representation. The curators for the exhibition are Gunnar B. Kvaran, Hanne Beate Ueland and Grete Årbu.
