GARDEN PLEASURE. THE GARDEN IN ART
Orangery

22 March to 24 June 2007

The exhibition illustrates the history of the quest for harmony between art and nature. Encompassing 120 masterpieces, the exhibition gives insight into the fascinating world of medieval garden symbolism, addresses the theme of baroque palatial gardens, shows gardens of the Biedermeier era or the vision of the Impressionists.
Highlights of the exhibition are Bernardo Bellotto’s Vienna seen from the Belvedere, Claude Monet’s Garden in Giverny and Gustav Klimt’s cottage garden. There are masterpieces of Classical Modern art, including Edvard Munch, August Macke and Emil Nolde, also interpretations of contemporary art, some of which were specially created for Garden Pleasures.
Locations chosen for the exhibition are the lavishly refurbished Belvedere Orangery and the Atelier Augarten, where contemporary works are being shown, including Ian Hamilton Finlay, Marc Dion and Candida Höfer.
