KAREN KILIMNIK

Upper Belvedere
19 May to 26 September

In the exhibition series Intervention, which was launched in 2007, twice a year artists are invited to show their work and create a link with the Belvedere’s architecture, history and collection. After Gudrun Kampl, Brigitte Kowanz, Franz Kapfer, Christian Hutzinger and Werner Reiterer, the American artist Karen Kilimnik is now showing her work in the Makart Room and the northwest octagon at the Upper Belvedere.
When she explored the Belvedere and its collection, Kilimnik was interested in the opulent animal pictures by Philipp Ferdinand de Hamilton and reinterpreted these in her paintings. She explored the organization of chaos and order - art and interior merge to form an installation in which she stages a “theater of sensations.” Kilimnik’s sumptuous images allude to the powers of illusion production that are served both by the pomp of the court and the world of glamour.
