In Sonia Leimer’s work, spaces and objects that were created in specific historical contexts undergo a transformation that makes history and social change tangible. In her first solo show at the Barbara Gross Galerie the artist examines the impact that utopian ideas of space exploration have had upon technology and design since the late 1950s.
Large photographs form fragments of the interior of the Space Simulator, built in Holland in 1966 to test satellites and probes. Taken in black space in long exposures, these images will be presented as room dividers in the white cube of the gallery space. Opposite them. transformed into sculptural objects, FAT LAVA vases from the 1960s and 1970s occupy the exhibition space.
In the gallery‘s skylight room Sonia Leimer shows an unusual, yet functional piece of sculpture, made of different types of tables in various heights, cast in concrete. The surface of each table refers to a different provenance—the working world, recreational space and living space— and relates to the gallerist‘s working environment in this room.
