This summer Doug Aitken’s project Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening, takes over the Barbican from Saturday 27 June with more than 100 free events over 30 days, with special ticketed events every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
This ‘living exhibition’ will include performances, works and residencies by over 100 artists including Siobhan Davies, Ed Ruscha, Terry Riley, Stephen Shore, Lawrence Weiner, Urs Fischer, Martin Creed, Olaf Breuning, Suicide, Lawrence Weiner, Tal R, Pedro Reyes, Boredoms, Mike Figgis, Urs Fischer, Ernesto Neto, Olafur Eliasson, Anri Sala, Savages, Joanna Hogg and Marcus Coates and no day of Station to Station will be the same.

Today, 26 May 2015, the Barbican announces further programming details for Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening — American multi-media artist Doug Aitken ’s experiment in spontaneous artistic creation taking over the Centre’s indoor and outdoor spaces (Art Gallery, The Curve, Concert Hall, Cinemas, Lakeside Terrace and Sculpture Court) for 30 days this summer from Saturday 27 June.
Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Station to Stationfeatures over 50 performances, 20 residencies, rehearsals, workshops and talks involving more than 100 international and UK-based artists from the world of contemporary art, music, dance, graphic design and film. A ‘living exhibition’encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration among artists from different backgrounds, the month-long event includes FREE access for visitors to all daytime activities, with special ticketed evening performances in the Art Gallery, Cinemas and Concert Hall.
Doug Aitken said: “Station to Station is a platform for progressive culture and new artistic experimentation. It will be amazing to see Station to Station come to life in London in such a unique, multi-arts environment as the Barbican. This is a living exhibition with artists of all mediums, creating unique works and unpredictable encounters every day.”
Throughout Station to Station, the Lakeside Terrace and Sculpture Court host outdoor installations: immersive yurts designed by Kenneth Anger, Urs Fischer, Liz Glynn (who is on site to give performative lectures on theories of the universe and human experience) and Ernesto Neto; Olaf Breuning ’s multi-coloured time-based smoke performance (Thursdays to Sundays, evening and afternoon); and late evening screenings of Winslow, Arizona 9/19/13 – Stephen Shore’s photographic slide show of 180 images shot over one day .
In response to the dynamic architecture of the Curve, Los Angeles-based digital artists Aaron Koblin and Ben Tricklebank present a new interactive laser commission, Light Echoes. Visitors enter the Curve, transformed into a dark, immersive environment. Led through the space by shifting projections, their movements are tracked and revealed in a finale as abstractions. Light Echoes runs until 6 September 2015.
Station to Station at the Barbican builds on Doug Aitken’sStation to Station project which crossed North America by train in 2013 travelling 4,000 miles from the Atlantic to the Pacific over 24 days, creating a platform for cross-disciplinary collaboration through a series of events in major cities and off-the-grid locations, with London being its next iteration.
The Vinyl Factory Recording Studio captures new music and live performances, some of which are pressed by The Vinyl Factory’s mobile pressing unit The Vinyl Factory Pressas part of the limited edition copies of Station to Station vinyl records daily. Installed at Silk Street Entrance, The Vinyl Factory Press presses more than 6000 copies of 20 different albums over the month, including those by resident musicians and previously unpublished recordings from the first presentation of Station to Station in the US. Musicians include:Cold Cave, LoneLady, Thurston Moore, Terry Riley andSuicide among others.
Vinyl records are sold in the gallery shop and feature artwork produced by resident graphic designers Fraser Muggeridgeand Åbäke .

Boredoms lead an 88-cymbal-players performance in the Concert Hall; New York-based artist Hisham Akira Bharoocha who works musically under the name Soft Circleand London exploratory project patten will be in residence for two days in the Music Studio; J. Spaceman (Spiritualized)performs a new score live to a screening of William Eggleston’s seminal 1974 film Stranded in Canton; musician and multi-media artist EMA is in residence in the Art Gallery for three days, culminating in the immersive performance/installation I Wanna Destroy (Sacred Objects From Suburban Homes), featuring music, visuals, and a bespoke virtual reality environment for Oculus Rift designed with collaborator Zach Krausnick incorporating virtual copies of visitors’ sacred objects from their homes ; Demdike Stareand Michael England create new visuals for a live performance as part of an evening curated by NTS; Suicidepresent new music and classics from their back catalogue in A Punk Mass event in the Concert Hall; resident in the Art Gallery for five days, LoneLady develops new music and visuals inspired by concrete and brutalism, presenting this new material during an evening performance; also in residence,Mica Levi works on six new pieces for Moog Soundlab UKmodular synthesiser, before a world premiere live performance by Eliza McCarthy as part of an evening event; Terry Riley is in residence for five days in the Art Gallery, writing music for an ensemble featuring brass, toy pianos, percussion, prepared piano and children’s choir, culminating in a Concert Hall performance of new material; ‘maximalist’ composerCharlemagne Palestine premiers INTERRVALLISSPHERE ii, a durational performance for analogue synths in 3 parts, performed during a one-day residency; during the closing weekend, Savages collaborate with A Dead Forest Indexand Fernanda Muñoz-Newsome on a new audio-visual performance incorporating live sound and lights.

For the duration of Station to Station, Tal R brings his Rosa Pagoda woodblock printing studio to the Art Gallery: at the weekend, visitors can sip pink lemonade whilst magenta prints are being created; d uring the opening weekend, Pedro Reyes hosts a two-day event in the Art Gallery entitledSpiritual Speed Dating, where invited spiritual figures from various religions, lifestyles and teaching groups discuss spirituality, sharing rituals and offering the public a chance to learn more about spirituality and creativity, while Tal R sets up an itinerant cookie-fortune tent, inviting artists to consult with him in the dark about their creative blocks; Jeremy Deller with percussionist George Barton present Factory Records live, two weekend Art Gallery performances with thanks to the North West Sound Archive in Lancashire; during a three-day residency, Martin Creed rehearses a new performance piece including painting, music and choreography, with a Saturday evening performance featuring his band and dancers; Marcus Coates is resident in the Art Gallery five days a week throughout Station to Station, presenting his interactive projectAnswer Painting, where the artist responds with oil paintings to issues presented to him through intimate one-to-one consultations; Albert Oehlen joins Station to Station for a one day painting performance; Anri Sala is in residence in the Art Gallery for three days, working with overtone singer Anna-Maria Hefele on merging two well-known pieces of music (The Internationale and La Marseillaise), presenting the results in short performances throughout the day.
DANCE RESIDENCIES
Choreographers Ann Van den Broek, Siobhan Davies Dance, Trajal Harrell and New Movement Collective (with ScanLAB Projects and cellist Oliver Coates) take over the Art Gallery for a week each, rehearsing, developing new material and performing. Siobhan Davies Dance is joined by artist Jeremy Millar, neurologist Jonathan Cole and five dance artists, working on a new piece exploring the relationship between thought and movement. This residency also includes performances of the 2013 work Manual –investigating how language transforms into gesture when audience members are invited to help a dance artist to stand up using verbal instructions. For one evening during her residency, Ann Van den Broek and her dancers present The Black Piece, a work performed in darkness. For the culmination of his residency, Trajal Harrell presents an evening performance of his piece Judson Church is Ringing in Harlem (Made-to-Measure)/Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at The Judson Church (M2M).

Introducing Station to Station, on Friday 19 June the Barbican hosts the UK public premiere of Doug Aitken’s Station to Station feature film, a high-speed road trip through modern creativity comprised of 62 one-minute films documenting the 2013 journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The screening is followed by a Q&A with Doug Aitken, hosted by Miranda Sawyer.
Previously unseen footage from the film is projected on to six floor-to-ceiling 4-metre high screens throughout the 30 days ofStation to Station as part of an immersive Art Gallery video installation, with live resident DJ-VJ Austin Meredithorchestrating visuals and sound. This digitally expanded-cinema installation also shows works by contributing artists and filmmakers including Francis Alÿs, Kenneth Anger,Yayoi Kusama, Angelica Mesiti, Raymond Pettibon, Gus Van Sant and Fischli & Weiss among others.
Film-makers creating content as part of Station to Station at the Barbican include: award-winning directors Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard in residence to create a new film inspired by Milton’s Paradise Lost, capturing the architecture and atmosphere of the Barbican, with rushes presented alongside a Q&A with Pollard and Forsyth during the closing weekend;Joanna Hogg joining her partner Nick Turvey to create a new short film especially for the project; and Oscar-nominated film director Mike Figgis also in residence in the gallery for one week creating a new short.
As part of Station to Station, artists and film-makers screen their own work in the Barbican Cinema 2, followed by a conversation with the directors themselves. Screenings and talks feature: Joanna Hogg’s Exhibition starring Slits frontwoman Viv Albertine and conceptual artist Liam Gillick - followed by a talk with Hogg; The Raft of the Medusa, a new Jarman-inspired multi-platform collaboration between writerSimon Armitage and film-maker Richard Heslop, with music by Simon Fisher Turner - followed by a talk with Armitage and Heslop; and Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s debut feature 20,000 Days on Earth – a documentary/ music drama centred around Nick Cave’s artistic process – followed by a talk with the two film-makers.
RESIDENT GRAPHIC DESIGNERS
In residence for a fortnight each, graphic designers Fraser Muggeridge studio brings his Inky Lab to the Barbican, along with friends, and Åbäke also bring their studio. They both make interventions and create products in both digital and analogue format, using cutting edge tools, such as drawing machines, as well as silkscreen, woodblock, and print making techniques.
THROUGHOUT STATION TO STATION
Performances by international and London-based artists include: Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band; Hackney Colliery Band; Capital Children’s Choir; School of Hypnosis, a young collective of classically trained musicians; hula hoop group Marawa The Amazing and her Majorettes; The Turbans; Drum Works; and the brass band Tongues of Fire.
Screenings of Ed Ruscha’s 1971 short film Premium take place every Saturday lunchtime, while on each occasion 100 portions of cactus omelette, prepared following Ruscha’s special recipe, are served to visitors.
On display throughout the project in the Art Gallery will beStation to Station posters inspired by the theme of ‘Freedom’ and designed by artists, architects and designers including: Michael Landy, Bob and Roberta Smith,Juergen Teller, Gillian Wearing, Jane and Louise Wilson, and Richard Wilson.
Hosted by Doug Aitken, Richard Wentworth and London-based commentators, a series of informal lunchtime talks focus on life in the 21st century and creative practice. The series also includes two talks programmed by Station to Stationmedia partner DAZED, featuring the magazine’s Visual Arts Editor Francesca Gavin and Editor in Chief Tim Noakes.
London-based food-designers DesignMarketo host four hands-on workshops focusing on hand-made incense, alcoholic preservation, using grains to make music and looking at how bread can be entertaining.
Learning Partner Roundhouse Radio’s Emerging Producers, aged 18 to 25, record interviews and performance highlights to be featured in a series of Station to Station podcasts.

Screenings of Ed Ruscha’s 1971 short film Premium take place every Saturday lunchtime, while on each occasion 100 portions of cactus omelette, prepared following Ruscha’s special recipe, are served to visitors.
On display throughout the project in the Art Gallery will beStation to Station posters inspired by the theme of ‘Freedom’ and designed by artists, architects and designers including: Michael Landy, Bob and Roberta Smith,Juergen Teller, Gillian Wearing, Jane and Louise Wilson, and Richard Wilson.
Hosted by Doug Aitken, Richard Wentworth and London-based commentators, a series of informal lunchtime talks focus on life in the 21st century and creative practice. The series also includes two talks programmed by Station to Stationmedia partner DAZED, featuring the magazine’s Visual Arts Editor Francesca Gavin and Editor in Chief Tim Noakes.
London-based food-designers DesignMarketo host four hands-on workshops focusing on hand-made incense, alcoholic preservation, using grains to make music and looking at how bread can be entertaining.
Learning Partner Roundhouse Radio’s Emerging Producers, aged 18 to 25, record interviews and performance highlights to be featured in a series of Station to Station podcasts.
