3rd Berlin Biennale 2004
14 Feb - 18 Apr 2004
3rd berlin biennial for contemporary art
14 February - 18 April 2004
The 3rd berlin biennial for contempory art is taking place from 14 February to 18 April 2004. Ute Meta Bauer, founding director of the Office For Contemporary Art in Oslo and Professor for Theory, Practice and Transfer of Contemporary Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and recently Co-Curator on Okwui Enwezor’s Documenta11 team, serves as Artistic Director for the 3rd berlin biennial.
KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin-Mitte, institutional partner of the berlin biennial since its beginning in 1998, will again provide exhibition space for the 3rd berlin biennial in 2004. With the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin-Kreuzberg a second, internationally established exhibition site is now for the first time being made available for the 3rd berlin biennial. 4500 qm exhibition space will be in use for the 3rd berlin biennial. The film programme of the 3rd berlin biennial for contemporary art comprising 30 cineastic works will be shown at Kino Arsenal near Potsdamer Platz.
With the first berlin biennial for contemporary art in 1998 a unique, international biennial for Germany was established. With the inauguration of the berlin biennial for contemporary art, the project occurring at regular intervals and based Berlin aims to react to developments in the city. Both the media response and the number of visitors to the first and second biennial, each with approx. 60,000 interested viewers from Germany and abroad, attest to the significance of the contemporary art event.
For the third edition of this young biennial - embedded in the context of the fundamental urban restructuring processes that has so shaped the city since the end of the east-west conflict - Berlin should serve as a general reference for the presentation of a broadly applied international artistic spectrum of visual art, architectural, cinematic, performative, sonic as well as spatial productions. Contributions by 50 international artists from different geografics, artistic projects and initiatives will be installed with regard to the specific discourses on site, in order to use the backdrop of these local structures and scenes to draw associations to overlaps and parallels in similar discourses elsewhere.
In conjunction with the 3rd berlin biennial cultural producers will create distinct spaces of information within the exhibition in cooperation with the artistic director, which examine the five central themes MIGRATION, URBAN CONDITIONS, SONIC SCAPES, FASHIONS AND SCENES and OTHER CINEMAS. One will move through these so-called ”hubs” and encounter information allowing one to differently ”read” the artistic contributions spatially grouped around the hubs. The term hub is used here to describe an act of transition from one context to another. The issues of the hubs will be processed on-site and refer to the restructuring and remodeling relevant to the urban constellation and perception of Berlin and will also include historical references.
