BIGERT & BERGSTRÖM

IN THE WORKS OF THE SWEDISH AR...

In the works of the Swedish artist duo, Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström, the intricate mixture of technological brilliance and socio-political sensitivity often dazzles the viewer - and one of their latest series of work, "Pep Talk" is no exception from that rule. It consists of four columns, each crowned by a hemisphere, whereupon different sets, or scenarios, are projected, displaying groups of individuals involved in the activity of cheering and holloing. As in other pieces by the artists, such as "Earthquake" and "Looped Incubator", the spheres constitute tiny microcosms, where fragments, or extracts of real life situations are highlighted and brought to the attention of the viewer. It is a world where a world is observed, and - as in Foucault's epistemological analysis - the gaze generates power. A recurrent theme in Bigert and Bergström's pieces is to dissolve the confines between video art, sculpture, and performance art.
