PARALLEL

April 9- May 2, 2009

Bortolami is pleased to present Parallel, a three-artist exhibition featuring the work of Jeff Kessel, Alex Kwartler and Paul Lee. The contrasts and diversities between their works present current contemplations of line, texture and color that reconsider tenets of Modernism, Abstraction, and Expressionism.
Jeff Kessel (b. 1978) is a New York-based painter. He received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy in 2006 and a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2003. This is his first gallery exhibition.
Alex Kwartler (b. 1979) is also a painter who lives and works in New York. He has had solo exhibitions at John Connelly Presents, and has been included in group shows at Casey Kaplan Gallery; the P.S. 1 Institute of Contemporary Art; and many others. He graduated from The Cooper Union in 2002. His work will be featured in a forthcoming Phaidon publication currently being written and edited by Bob Nickas.
Paul Lee (b. 1974) was born in London and currently lives and works in New York. He has had solo exhibitions at Peres Projects in Los Angeles and Berlin and the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas. He was recently seen in ‘Mary’s Choice,” an exhibition curated by artist Mary Heilmann at 303 Gallery in New York; ‘The Station’ in Miami, curated by Shamim Momin and Nate Lowman. Lee will be included in the forthcoming ‘Abstract America, New Painting and Sculpture,’ at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
