Henriette Grahnert

27 April- 27 May 2005

Sutton Lane is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of German painter Henriette Grahnert.
Chipped paint, accidental brush strokes, drips, smudged duct tape - the leftovers and side products of a painting process are the elements that compose Henriette Grahnert’s pictures.
Debris born out of accidental gestures, is carefully arranged and retouched. Whatever is usually rejected as waste, such as pieces of used tape and residuals of canvas, is elevated into the picture. The traces of paint are presented in vitrines or packed into boxes, they are placed on a stage or are surrounded by a corona of light. Gaining their own life, they become cult objects and make room for associations.

Grahnert designs cabins and pavilions which she calls dilettante constructions, spatial designs with small constructional flaws that constantly betray their three dimensionality.

Besides exploring the subject of the painting process, Grahnert’s paintings are also coquettish allusions to the present hype around figurative painting.

Henriette Grahnert was born in 1977 in Dresden, Germany. She graduated in 2004 from the Academy of Art and Design in Leipzig.
