Capitain Petzel is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Kanagawa based artist Hiroko Yamaji. In the cabinet on the first floor, the show features a selection of recent paintings.

Yamaji ́s starting point for her images is a wide repertoire, ranging from personal experiences, encounters with things and people in urban contexts, architectural references, catastrophes and ancient Buddhist iconography. The references are overlapped with spontaneous colorful strokes and integrated into her imaginary vibrant compositions. Incidentally she builds images that resemble natural landscapes or familiar motives, with no connections to the former ones. All the exhibited works remain untitled, leaving no clue or evidence regarding references.

Hiroko Yamaji (born 1983 in Mie, Japan) lives and works in Kanagawa. She obtained an MFA from Musashino Art University. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at NANZUKA, Tokyo (2016 and 2013); as well as in group shows at Van Horn, Düsseldorf (2012); Tokorozawa Biennal, Saitama (2009); and The Museum of Modern Art Gunma (2008). She is represented by NANZUKA, Tokyo.
