The exhibition presented from 5 March to 28 March 2010 in Ceaac’s International Space brings together work produced by the two Stuttgart artists Kerstin Schaefer and Rudolf Reiber, both having been in residence at Ceaac in Strasbourg between 2009 and 2010 within the framework of exchanges of artists between the Land of Bade-Würtemberg and the Drac Alsace, in partnership with the French Institute in Stuttgart.
KERSTIN SCHAEFER
Kerstin Schaefer, a painter who was born in Lörrach, a city situated 5 km from the District of three frontiers, composed of German, French and Swiss cities, presents an exhibition which brings us closer to Germany and its history as much as it liberates us. Regularly exhibited in Germany, particularly in Stuttgart and Berlin but also in New York, here the artist changes medium by presenting a series of paintings in Ceaac’s International Space that she produced concerning pieces of German porcelaine, white or ivory in colour, within the framework of a precious collaboration with the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg.
Communicating mostly through images rather than words, Kerstin moved these objects into the streets of Strasbourg in order to place them in a new context, conferring on them the status of icons. She thus transformed utilitarian craft pieces into more or less useless fetishes that are almost animated and capable of displaying history.
‘‘I think I’ve created some ‘thank-yous’ – gifts for ghosts, they can eat them, their food is invisible and has no physical consistancy, they should all be fed with lovely memories’’. (Kerstin Schaefer)
RUDOLF REIBER
Rudolf Reiber is a protean artist. Recently exhibited in the villa Merkel, in Ulmer Museum and at the tenth Istanbul International Biennale, his pieces are based on recurring themes such as space, time and the void and take the form of videos, installations and photographs.
On the occasion of the release of his new catalogue ‘‘German Skies’’ (published by Ceaac), Rudolf Reiber will unveil recent works in Ceaac’s International Space treating both colour and its reception and landscape. This exhibition, divided into two parts, will be dedicated both to the colour of the sky and the colour of the ocean. The artist will present a series of portraits of German skies which will take the form of monochrome paintings laquered on to steel, precisely reproducing the camouflage painting techniques employed by the British Royal Air Force, along with a series of photographs taken on the Isle of Sylt, on the route to England.
