A obra videográfica de Michel Auder (Soissons, França, 1945) ficou indelevelmente marcada por vicissitudes de ordem biográfica: em 1969, o jovem aspirante a cineasta casa-se com Viva, uma das atrizes diletas de Andy Warhol, que conhecera em Paris pouco tempo antes, e muda-se para Nova Iorque. Até finais da década de 1980, filma obsessivamente o círculo de pessoas com quem vive e convive, utilizando esse abundante material em filmes que retratam essas personagens (Viva, Andy Warhol, Brigid Berlin, Louis Waldon, Taylor Mead, Alice Neel, Cindy Sherman, entre outros) e o seu quotidiano. Desenvolvendo nesses e noutros filmes um estilo documental muito próprio, de forte cunho diarístico, Michel Auder sempre recusou, no entanto, a categoria do documentário e a concomitante noção de verdade de que aquela não se consegue desligar. Além de algumas incursões na ficção, por vezes com forte sentido autobiográfico, importa ainda destacar os vídeos feitos na década de 1980 a partir da filmagem de imagens televisivas, bem como os vídeos baseados na livre associação de imagens, que põem em jogo modos de pensamento visual próximos da poesia. A exposição está ancorada neste tipo de obras; o extenso programa de sessões no auditório (a apresentar oportunamente) abarca as outas vertentes do seu trabalho em vídeo.
Retrato de Michel Auder é parte de uma colaboração com a Kunsthalle Basel, que em junho de 2013 apresentará uma outra exposição igualmente dedicada ao artista.
In 1969, while still aspiring to become a filmmaker, Michel Auder (Soissons, France, 1945) married one of Andy Warhol’s favourite actresses, Viva, whom he had met in Paris shortly before, and moved to New York. This biographical episode would leave an indelible mark in his video work. In fact, until the late 1980s, Michel Auder obsessively filmed the circle of people he lived and socialised with, using this abundant material to make films that portrayed those characters (Viva, Andy Warhol, Brigid Berlin, Louis Waldon, Taylor Mead, Alice Neel and Cindy Sherman, among others) and their daily life. Besides a significant number of films in which he developed a very particular documentary style, Michel Auder also made some incursions into fiction, sometimes with a highly autobiographical slant, as well as videos based on the filming of television images and others constructed through a loose association of images, which involve modes of visual thinking that come very close to poetry. His exhibition at Culturgest is rooted in works of this type; the extensive programme of film sessions in the auditorium covers other aspects of his video work.
