Obras da Coleção da Caixa Geral de Depósitos
20 May – 10 September 2017

Curator Delfim Sardo

Taking place simultaneously with the exhibition The Accidental Photographer, a selection of works from the Coleção da Caixa Geral de Depósitos relating to the same period will also be exhibited, but on other kinds of supports.

The aim is to create a context that allows for a better understanding of the cultural transformations taking place in Portugal in the 1970s. This will be made possible through the display of a group of works by the same artists that are represented at the exhibition presented in Gallery 1, together with works by other artists who have also left their mark on the Portuguese artistic panorama, such as Eduardo Batarda, Álvaro Lapa, Joaquim Rodrigo, João Vieira, Pires Vieira and Noronha da Costa.

Particular emphasis is given to the presentation of two installations by Alberto Carneiro, certainly constituting two of the most important works by this artist, and which are very rarely seen together: The Cane Field: Memory Metamorphosis of an Absent Body, from 1968 and A Forest for your Dreams, from 1970, with this latter work being loaned for this exhibition by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

The Coleção da Caixa Geral de Depósitos, which was started in 1983, consists of a group of more than 700 works on a wide variety of supports. Works from this collection have been regularly presented at different exhibitions, thus making it better known to the public from a wide variety of curatorial and thematic viewpoints.
