Abstract-Mad-Stir-Delirium-Copper-Bottomed-Work-Stick-Shop
The project is part of the artists’ ongoing inquiry into the potential of artistic collaboration and the momentary disintegration of authorship in improvisational performances and actions in different constellations of engagement. A number of partly painted metal poles are the formal elements that will motivate a series of individual and collective actions translate knowledge and subjective identification into corporality and movement. Within the same time unit and using the same makeshift objects, different artistic propositions and seemingly contradictory concepts are introduced in order to “shape and re-shape one’s thinking with an unusual treatment/handling of pictures/objects” (Koether). In the process, the scripted and non-scripted acts - shifting between constructing and destroying an activated communal space of performance - produce the material for the project’s subsequent transformation into an exhibition. Abstract-Mad-Stir-Delirium-Copper-Bottomed-Work-Stick-Shop is a continuation of a collaborative installation by Yuki Kimura, Jutta Koether, and Ei Arakawa conceived earlier this year for a group exhibition at the Contemporary Art Center in Mito, Japan.
Ei Arakawa (*1977 in Iwaki, Fukushima, Japan) lives and works in New York. Recent exhibitions and performances include Hurt Locker Instruments, Casco - The Office for Art, Design and Theory, Utrecht, The Netherlands (2010); Quasar <> Lanterns, Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2009) (with Sergei Tcherepnin); Non-solo show, Non-group show, Kunsthalle Zürich, Switzerland (2009). Yuki Kimura (*1971 in Kyoto, Japan) lives and works in Kyoto. Recent solo exhibitions include Untitled, Izu Photo Museum Shizuoka (2010); Year 1940 was a leap year starting on Monday, Taka Ishii Gallery Tokyo (2009); POSTERIORITY, Daiwa Press Viewing Room, Hiroshima (2009). Recent group shows include Kaza Ana / Air Hole: Another Form of Conceptualism from Asia, The National Museum of Art, Osaka; Quiet Attentions: Departure from Women, Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito.
Jutta Koether (*1958 in Cologne, Germany) lives and works in Berlin. Since 2010 she has been a professor at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg. Recent solo exhibitions include Jutta Koether: The Thirst, Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2011); Berliner Schlüssel, Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Berlin (2011); Leibhaftige Malerei JXXXA, Bergen Kunsthall, Norway (2008); Fantasia Colonia, Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne (2006).
