From the 15th of December, the daadgalerie will be featuring audiovisual field recordings and installations by the Mexican sound artist Israel Martinez. If one compares his new Berlin works to his harsh documents of acoustic and social reality in Mexico one receives the impression that social life in Berlin is seamless and harmless: Crowds gathering at the Gendarmenmarkt for outdoor picnics at the 'Berlin Klassik' festival or those who pass time on the beach at Wannsee, experimental street musicians and surfers. The social study shows only one facet of his mostly audiovisual works. Others concern the musical aspect of acoustic reality, the correlation of the visual and the auditory, the rhythm of urban movements, machines and human actions. Martinez captures these on his endless walks, they are then scaled down through installation works and shown in sections. The camera is mostly still, it represents a neutral observer’s perspective or the view of a walking person, a person travelling via car, boat or train; reality is merely a passing stranger, which doesn't stop to make an impression. The powerlessness sound can create is most prominent in the work "Surrounded", for which Martinez merges recordings of Mexico City with circling helicopters in London which descend upon an "ideal“ Berlin world.
Born 1979 in Guadalajara (Mexico), lives in Zapopan (Mexico). Freelance electronic musician, laptop performer, sound artist and multidisciplinary artist. Since 2007 he has taught (sound art, sound in contemporary visual art) at various institutions in Mexico, as well as being active as a journalist and critic. Education (electronic music and sound art) at the Mexican Center for Music and Sound Art (Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras, CMMAS).
Martínez has received composition commissions from numerous institutions in Mexico; his composition Mi Vida received an Award of Distinction in the Digital Musics category of Prix Ars Electronica 2007.
