David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to present Samara Caughey's second solo exhibition, Palimpsest. The opening reception will be held on Friday, January 12th from 6 to 9pm, and the exhibition will be on view through February 10th. For Palimpsest, Caughey extends her ongoing practice of exploring the possibility of materials such as plaster, wood, wire and yarn, through formal progressions, color relationships and repetitive structures.
Samara Caughey's notable series of sculptural works channel Neo-Classical and Constructivist influences and configurations. Her fascination with uncommon combinations leads to synthetic re-creations of the figure, planar and linear forms and strict geometrical shapes. This aesthetic of mixing permeates the gaps between genres and provokes spatial tensions between shapes.
Perhaps the most distinctive characteristic of Caughey's work is her understated use of color and volume. Caughey's use of color is sneaky, and not limited to the physical material of paint. Her brush strokes echo and disappear in swatches of fabric and subtly altered logs. To the same effect, Caughey's constructions of loosely hinged sticks mimic the voluminous presence and visual patterns of traditional sculpture.
Palimpsest involves a subtle masking of history within each object. Her formal approach allows for materials to be used as metaphor while simultaneously emphasizing the recognizable object within each disparate element. Caughey is conceptually allured by the unrealized as well as by the potential of remaking or reworking sculptures documented but no longer in existence. She has come to describe her work as "a generation of a generation."
