ABCDLP 002 - Short Big Drama by George van Dam for Short Big Yellow Drawing Machine by Angela Bulloch
11 September – 6 October 2012

Esther Schipper is proud to present a new Drawing Machine by Angela Bulloch and the record release of ABCDLP 002 - Short Big Drama by George van Dam for Short Big Yellow Drawing Machine by Angela Bulloch, a special project in the gallery’s showroom.
Since the early 1990s, Bulloch has worked on a series of drawing machines, which consist of an automated armature moving a drawing implement across a flat surface. In this case, the automated drawing process is driven by George van Dam.
On show in addition to the drawing machine, is a group of tailor-made listening posts in small, medium, large and the complete ensemble Extra Large Yellow Listening Station. The showroom of Esther Schipper, Berlin is transformed into a place for listening to music.
AB: “There is a reverse strategy employed in that the machine becomes an instrument of the music. The machine moves like the music sounds...intense, neurotic perverted even because it seems to be shadowing the music self consciously.”
GvD: “The music was constructed with the machine in mind... according to certain parameters like frequency range, using sounds with accents and short bursts of music with attack... which we preordained because of the machines' proclivities.”
ABCDLP 002 is the second release of the independent record label ABCDLP, which the artist established with the specific purpose of making the music relating to her work available to a larger audience. The record Short Big Drama is an edition of 500 (250 black vinyl, 250 yellow vinyl) composed and performed by George van Dam especially for Bulloch's new installation Short Big Yellow Drawing Machine, 2012, which will be on view for the first time in the gallery.
ABCDLP 003 will be a new musical composition by David Grubbs due out in spring 2013.
