GEDI SIBONY
opening: Friday, March 14th 2008, from 7 p.m. until April 24th 2008
visits only by appointment
On the occasion of the opening of its new exhibition space, ZERO. is delighted to present the first solo show in Italy of the New York-based artist Gedi Sibony.
Hollow-core doors, cardboard, carpet pieces, plywood cut-offs, old frames, simple and light salvaged materials make up the starting lexicon for Sibony’s sculptural interventions. His work tantalizes the perceptive and the sensitive dimensions of the space in which we are moving by easing transitions and building momentum not unlike a narrative structure.
Almost like a sophisticated shangai player, Sibony spots points of force and guidelines within the space he is meddling in, to afterwards remove redundant and unnecessary elements and give shape to precarious architectonic situations, articulated following seductive visual rhythms which flow at different speeds. There stand out assemblages which seem to release from the properties of the materials they are made of, unfolding instable and vulnerable equilibriums, detained in the very moment that precedes the failure. In this way Sibony divests sculpture of its monumentality and stability but, almost paradoxically, heightens its evocative power.
Each involved element discloses its potential through the surrounding components and the interaction with the architecture; all together they outline a covertly anthropomorphic sketch made of vacuum, solid parts, blind spots and references which covey the visitor’s sight to an esoteric but immanent path, free from prearranged precepts and open to transformation.
