The exhibition Opening Spaces for Action, as part of the international music programme CAGE100 (initiated by The Forum of Contemporary Music Leipzig [FZML], July 2012 – July 2013, centers around major aesthetic concerns addressed and explored by John Cage. The notions of indeterminacy, participation, re-enactment, or the relationship between art and life – to name but a few – provide an insight into his lasting impact on contemporary artistic production. These issues will be discussed against the background of current artistic and curatorial discourse. The exhibition presents works by internationally acclaimed and emerging artists, and consists of existing as well as commissioned, site-specific works of art. The artistic positions – ranging from interactive installations, works in progress, sound and media works to performances – do not always directly reference Cage’s work. Rather, they reflect an attempt to create new possibilities of experience through art.

Cage not only questioned notions of authorship, authenticity and the usual methods involved in the presentation and reception of art; he also aimed to create new spaces for action through the inclusion, involvement and active participation of the audiences. Thus the exhibition’s dramaturgy and curatorial processes follow and highlight Cage’s democratic concept of art. It is conceived of as an interactive setting, an exhibition in progress that will expand and evolve. Performances, lectures, music and dance events as well as workshops will be held to complement and extend possilbe forms of reception.

Holiday activities and workshops are available for a wide range of young audiences. Here, participants will have the opportunity to explore and perform Cage’s oeuvre and his approach to the concepts of silence, coincidence and everyday sonic phenomena.

CAGE100 is an international artistic programme under the patronage of Pierre Boulez.
