JONAS DAHLBERG
Hall of Mirrors
2 November 2012 - 6 January 2013
In the exhibition Hall of Mirrors the artist Jonas Dahlberg creates his own world where the border between fiction and reality reaches its resolution. The recurring element in his art is the study of the psychological aspects of space. The architectural space is in constant focus. Within that space, whether it is a room or a public space, a drama unfolds without dramatic overtones. But still, questions about the human position in relation to power and identity confront us.
Jonas Dahlberg was born in 1970 and lives and works in Stockholm. He is one of Sweden's more established contemporary artists, both nationally and internationally. Despite his clear position in the international contemporary art scene, he has done few solo exhibitions in Sweden. Hall of Mirrors is his first presentation in Gothenburg. The exhibition presents seven of his films and one sound work. The latter is based on an archival practice. For some time he has collected subjective memories of architecture and film from individuals. We can listen to these stories in an installation where the room reaches its full resolution. The work Shadow Room was completed in 2011 and is the latest of his films.
Apart from film, Jonas Dahlberg also works with sculpture and photography. In 2012, he performed set design for an opera at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva. He has participated in numerous exhibitions, among which may be mentioned Manifesta 4, Frankfurt (2002); Italian Pavillion at 50th Biennale di Venezia (2003); the national representative for Sweden at the 26th Bienal de São Paulo (2004); Momentum 04, Moss (2004); Modern Museum, Stockholm (2005); FRAC, Dijon (2006); Taipei Biennial (2006); Leeum Museum of Art, Seoul (2007); Kunsthalle Wien (2008); Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (2009); and Prospect II New Orleans Biennial (2011).
