Galerija Gregor Podnar / DUM presents the exhibition Untitled by the Bulgarian artist Ivan Moudov at the Project Space Galerija Gregor Podnar. The show features a selection of works created between 2005 and 2013.

Ivan Moudov is one of most internationally recognised artists currently working in Bulgaria. He completed his studies at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia in 2002 and soon became one of the most notable artists of his generation. Moudov’s art practice includes works in the media of photography, video, video performance, installation, and works on paper, created in the specific socio-political circumstances and contexts of the art system. His works interrogate systems of power, political and economic conditions, and their mechanisms. But the constant that runs through all of Moudov’s work is the relationship of these structures to the issue of the art system and how the individual is positioned within it. The art system is in itself an abstract structure that organises the production, context, reception, and distribution of artworks, and these elements are the “instrument” by which Moudov interrogates phenomena from contemporary art and society. His artworks and projects are thus connected by a specific artistic expression – the interlacing of a personal poetics with social commitment – which touches on questions of authorship, the artist’s prehistory, the repetition of the artistic gesture and its contextualisation, and the economic and socio-political habitus and its role. And it is precisely this relationship between the artist’s personal poetics and the different vectors of his commitment that the exhibition at the Project Space Galerija Gregor Podnar seeks to present, for this is key to a comprehensive reading of Moudov’s art practice. The exhibition, therefore, is not structured as a linear narration but rather attempts to show the artist’s traversal of various media, methods of artistic research, and thematic categories. Ivan Moudov’s work is always a remarkably intense and acute analysis of the relations of power between people and the universally accepted conventions that govern both society and the art world. Thus viewers often find themselves in unexpected situations that on first glance seem extremely provocative, at times even shocking, but on closer inspection express to a much greater degree an incredible sensibility, the artist’s “personal poetics of commitment”, which reveals to us even more intensely and more directly the realities of the systems in which we live.
