Antoni Tàpies: From Object to Sculpture (1964–2009) is a singular opportunity for the public to discover one of the most fascinating aspects of this Catalan artist: his facet as a sculptor. The selection of nearly one hundred works spans his entire sculptural and objectual production, documenting his experiments with different mediums and materials, from the early objects and assemblages of the mid-1960s and 1970s to his final fireclay and bronze pieces. This oeuvre, produced over the course of five decades, constitutes a unique and independent body of work that allows us to trace his evolution as an artist.
Organized both chronologically and thematically, alternating the artist's development over time and an analysis of his subjects, materials, and methods, this show provides a clear vision of the characteristic elements of Antoni Tàpies's artistic universe, from his concept of the wall to objects such as chairs, beds, or books—elements that are part of his personal vocabulary, which he transformed into sculptures of monumental proportions or subtle small-format pieces. The exhibition unveils Tàpies's constant preoccupation with the sculptural problem and, for the first time, brings his sculpture face-to-face with itself.
