Works from the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection at the Hamburger Bahnhof, The Collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Sammlung Marzona

This spring major works of art from the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection will be shown in the Rieck Halls under the title “Von Carl Andre bis Bruce Nauman.” Enhanced by individual works from the collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Sammlung Marzona, the current presentation is dedicated to conceptual turning points in art after 1960.
The exhibition in the Rieck Halls encompasses central positions of Minimal and Post-Minimal Art, of Land Art and Conceptual Art. It extends from the stringent system and objectness, which Sol LeWitt and Carl Andre sought to bring into their works, to the documentation of ephemeral happenings in nature, such as those exemplified by the art of Robert Smithson, Hamish Fulton and Richard Long. At the same time it ranges from On Kawara’s serial works confronting time to the emphasis on materiality in the sculptures of Robert Morris and Richard Serra.
An intensive encounter with the works of art on display can be experienced by listening to words being spoken, as in the case of a sound installation by Robert Barry, as well as through the performative execution of instructions, exemplified by Bruce Nauman or through the experience of the sculptural characteristics of light, as is the case with Dan Flavin. These works invite the viewer to engage in the questioning of the medium inherent within them, including the location, temporality and the perception of art, and to take this process one step further.
