Antje Schiffers
18 Sep - 14 Nov 2010
Antje Schiffers collects the material for her projects in foreign environments and countries: by drawing flowers in Mexico, painting farms in Russia and Kyrgyzstan or as a commissioned artist in German corporations. The encounters, gifts and stories that Schiffers receives in exchange for her paintings and drawings form a body of work that juggles with the perceptions and reactions of different groups of people. In the exhibition in the Heidelberger Kunstverein, Schiffers has not concentrated on the documentation of a specific journey. She leaves her position as an observing traveller, taking a conversation with the director of the Heidelberg based collection for Outsider Art, the Sammlung Prinzhorn, as a starting point. Instead of being an observer she rather questions her own role as a visual artist. The selection of works in the exhibition allow the visitor to learn something about the artist Antje Schiffers through the round-about way of the gaze of others.
