HENRIEKE RIBBE

HENRIEKE RIBBE’S ARTISTIC PRAC...

Henrieke Ribbe’s artistic practice is not limited to a certain technique or specific medium. In addition to a large body of drawing works, she is working increasingly in oil on canvas. Ribbe’s representative painting oscillates in its content between private events based on photographs and, in the widest sense, public images appropriated from print media.
Ribbe’s work deals mainly with contrasting images containing art historical quotes as well as culture historical and cultural parameters. Her color use and choice of subject matter serve as connecting elements that relate both positions. When viewing the pictures together, a painterly tableau results that works on a formal level plus in its content as an overall image — culminating into contemporary “genre painting”. Henieke Ribbe’s work does not only establish a merging of private and public realms and a discourse around form and content, but also creates a type of reversal process whereby apparently public exchanges seem private interactions — a transformation of subject matter that also works in reverse. Source material is de-contextualized and re-interpreted by the artist’s ability to combine — resulting in “picture installations” that summarized, can be described as a development from the small to the large and the private to the public. The exhibition at Klara Wallner Galerie will be Henrieke Ribbe’s first solo presentation in a gallery. She was born in 1979 in Hannover and will soon finish her art studies at the Hochschule für bildende Kunst in Hamburg. The artist lives and works in Hamburg and Berlin. (Nadine Steinacker)
