ALPHABET SPECIES
Ivan Kiuaranov's recent paintings combine the ephemeral design of natural substrates with the constructions of alphabets. Each work communicates a shadow language subsumed by incoherent forces that beguile the imagination--like resurrected voices reacting lost meaning once lost in thick, dark forests. Each image is fecund with indigenous designs at once Bulgarian, but also of other worlds where foreign languages and understandings percolate the soil and air. The final revelation is a map that connects locations that can never be visited, places that exert unrealized mystery and desire.
