Josef Dabernigs Arbeiten kreisen um Kategorien der Wiederholung, Gleichförmigkeit und Bedeutungsarmut 1. Hinter solch ernüchterndem Befund verbirgt sich ein Spiel von präziser Verschleierung und diskursbezogener Kontertaktik. Wenn Dabernigs filmische Arbeiten in der eigenwilligen Handhabe von Fiktion und Dokument genrespezifische Standards lustvoll und konsequent ignorieren, stellt seine vielfältig mediale Arbeit die Geschichte2 des Künstlers in Form einer Transkription dar. Dabernig verschiebt mittels struktureller Praxis Inhaltliches auf eine Meta-Ebene und ist dabei der strengen formalen Kohärenz verpflichtet.
Für die Ausstellung in der Galerie Andreas Huber greift der Künstler auf erprobtes Material zurück: 1988 ließ Dabernig für ein in-situ Projekt Objekte in der Technik von Lüftungskanälen herstellen. Später wurden die sperrigen Zinkblech-Formen aus Gründen der Lagerhaltung zerlegt. Die normierten Bleche tauchen - quasi in Recycling-Strategie - wiederholt in Dabernigs Installationen auf. Dabei geht es primär um Fragen der Permutation im Spannungsfeld von Fläche und Raum.
Die zweite Arbeit in der Ausstellung ist das 2004 für den Grazer Kunstverein entwickelte und bislang in Wien nicht gezeigte Proposal for a New Kunsthaus, not further developed. Das Projekt - hier als Diaprojektion umgesetzt - thematisiert auf eine für den Künstler bezeichnend sarkastische Art virulente Fragen aktueller Museumsarchitektur.
Schließlich verweist eine dritte Arbeit auf Dabernigs neuen, in Produktion befindlichen Film Hotel Roccalba. Credits, Synopsis, Drehbuch und illustrierter Cast sind layoutiert und befragen - jenseits ihres Informationsgehalts - die Möglichkeiten der Repräsentation rein funktionaler Inhalte.
Die Galerie Andreas Huber freut sich Josef Dabernig, dessen Arbeiten in prominenten Zusammenhängen wie den Biennalen in Venedig von 2001 und 2003, der Manifesta 3 sowie in zahlreichen Einzelausstellungen, Beteiligungen und Filmfestivals international in Erscheinung treten, hier zum ersten Mal in einer Galerie-Einzelpräsentation in Wien zeigen zu können. 1 Maren Lübbke-Tidow - 2 Silvia Eiblmayr Die Ausstellung läuft vom 22. Josef Dabernig's works deal with categories of repetition, uniformity, and Bedeutungsarmut (1) (the absence of significance). Behind these disenchanting results, a play of accurate deception and discourse-related countertactics is concealed. While Dabernig's cinematic works, with their unconventional treatment of fiction and documentation, eagerly and consistently ignore genre standards, his manifold medial work represents the artist's (hi)story (Geschichte, 2) in form of a transcription. By means of a structural practice, Dabernig shifts contents to a meta-level, and in doing so is committed to strict formal coherence.
For his exhibition at Galerie Andreas Huber, the artist turns onto approved material: In 1988, Dabernig had objects produced for an in-situ project which construction refers to air duct technology. Later, the bulky forms made out of sheet zinc were taken apart for storage reasons. The standardized sheets repeatedly reappear in Dabernig's installations, as a kind of recycling strategy. This is primarily a question of permutation between the poles of surface and space.
The second work presented in the exhibition is Proposal for a New Kunsthaus, not further developed which Dabernig developed in 2004 for Grazer Kunstverein, and which has until now not been shown in Vienna. The project which is presented as slide projection here deals with virulent issues of contemporary architecture for museums in a for the artist characteristical sarcastic way.
Finally, a third piece refers to Dabernig's new film Hotel Roccalba which is currently in progress. Credits, synopsis, screenplay and illustrated cast have been layouted and - beyond their information content - question the possibilities of representation of purely functional contents.
Galerie Andreas Huber is happy to present Josef Dabernig's work which has been shown in prominent contexts such as at the Venice Biennial in 2001 and 2003, at Manifesta 3, in numerous solo and group shows, as well as at film festivals for the first time in a gallery solo show in Vienna.
