EOIN Mc HUGH
"All cognition is recollection."
23 July - 05 September 2009
Kerlin Gallery is pleased to announce it’s first solo exhibition by one of Ireland’s most exciting emerging artist’s. Born and currently based in Dublin, Mc Hugh’s career has been eagerly watched since his highly acclaimed NCAD degree show in 2005.
Mc Hugh’s practice is centred around his interest in the psychology of imagery. Through his paintings and drawings, Mc Hugh creates a two dimensional investigation of the space between the image, the object and the idea. Working predominantly in watercolour on found or old paper, he conceives enigmatic, representational vignettes that quietly compel the viewer to question the image presented. More recently his oil paintings demonstrate an affinity with the Dutch Masters of the 17th century. He intensively examines painters such as the Leiden fijnschilder painters, Vermeer, Ter Borch, Metsu and their methods of creating light through colour whilst adding a contemporary twist of subtle distortions and a multiplicity of meanings. Through suspension of disbelief, Mc Hugh strives to constantly keep the viewer questioning how they process images. By expanding his practice to encompass sculpture, installation and wallpaper he attempts to prevent one definitive interpretation being extracted from the work.
Eoin Mc Hugh has been exhibiting both Internationally and within Ireland since 2005 with solos shows at Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Dublin (2006) and Centre d’art Contemporain, Chateau des Adhemar, Montelimar, France (2007-08). Group shows include, Precaution, Irish Museum of Modern Art (2005); EV+A, Limerick (2006); RHA Annual Exhibition, Dublin (2006); The Square Root of Drawing, Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Dublin (2006); Rendez Vous, in conjunction with the Lyon Biennale, France (2007); Flight of the Dodo, Project Arts Centre, Dublin (2008); Phoenix Park, Kerlin Gallery, Dublin (2008). Mc Hugh’s work is held in many corporate and private collections both in Ireland and abroad.
